Optimal control of diffusion-convection-reaction processes using reduced-order models

چکیده
Two approaches for optimal control of diffusion-convection-reaction processes based on reduced-order models are presented. The approaches differ in the way spatial discretization is carried out to compute a reduced-order model suitable for controller design. In the first approach, the partial differential equation (PDE) that describes the process is first discretized in space and time using the finite difference method to derive a large number of recursive algebraic equations, which are written in the form of a discrete-time state-space model with sparse state, input and output matrices. Snapshots based on this high-dimensional state-space model are generated to calculate empirical eigenfunctions using proper orthogonal decomposition. The Galerkin projection with the computed empirical eigenfunctions as basis functions is then directly applied to the high-dimensional state-space model to derive a reduced-order model. In the second approach, a continuous-time finite-dimensional statespace model is constructed directly from the PDE through application of orthogonal collocation on finite elements in the spatial domain. The dimension of the derived state-space model can be further reduced using standard model reduction techniques. In both cases, optimal controllers are designed based on the low-order state-space models using discrete-time and continuous-time linear quadratic regulator (LQR) techniques. The effectiveness of the proposed methods are illustrated through applications to a diffusion-convection process and a diffusion-convection-reaction process. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A discontinuous Galerkin method for optimal control problems governed by a system of convection-diffusion PDEs with nonlinear reaction terms
In this paper, we study the numerical solution of optimal control problems governed by a system of convection diffusion PDEs with nonlinear reaction terms, arising from chemical processes. The symmetric interior penalty Galerkin (SIPG) method with upwinding for the convection term is used for discretization. Residual-based error estimators are used for the state, the adjoint and the control var...

متن کاملHybridized Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Convection-Diffusion-Reaction Problems
In this paper, we propose a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the convection-diffusion-reaction problems with mixed boundary conditions. The coercivity of the convection-reaction part is achieved by adding an upwinding term. We give error estimates of optimal order in the piecewise H1-seminorm. Furthermore, we show that the approximate solution of our scheme is close to that of t...
متن کاملLocal improvements to reduced-order approximations of optimal control problems governed by diffusion-convection-reaction equation
We consider the optimal control problem governed by diffusion convection reaction equation without control constraints. The proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) method is used to reduce the dimension of the problem. The POD method may be lack of accuracy if the POD basis depending on a set of parameters is used to approximate the problem depending on a different set of parameters. We are intere...
متن کاملFrom Traffic and Pedestrian Follow-the-Leader Models with Reaction Time to First Order Convection-Diffusion Flow Models
In this work, we derive first order continuum traffic flow models from a microscopic delayed follow-the-leader model. Those are applicable in the context of vehicular traffic flow as well as pedestrian traffic flow. The microscopic model is based on an optimal velocity function and a reaction time parameter. The corresponding macroscopic formulations in Eulerian or Lagrangian coordinates result...
